    Kamei Royale Japanese on Urbanspoon

Situated just a few blocks away from Waterfront station and the 2010 Olympic flame, Kamei Royale is right in the heart of all the action and frequently busy during lunch hours.  Opened in 1976 and renovated in 1990, Kamei Royale includes Robata grill, bar lounge, and Tatami rooms to accomodate many tour groups that frequent the Vancouver downtown area.

Kamei Royale is on the second floor of a lowrise and fairly easy to walk passed without noticing.  Similar to restaurants in Japan, their outside glass windows display numerous dishes of fake food representing some of their most interesting dishes like live lobster sashimi and Spanish mackeral.

Above, I ordered soft shell crab rolls.  The crab was almost caramelized.  Very crunchy legs.  The middle rolls had the crab shell with an oddly consistent yellow cream.  It looks more like eggs than the often messy softshell crab shell.  It didn't come out hot so it was not likely freshly cooked but it tasted good.

Chicken Terriyaki Don was cooked well by having a crispy skin and keeping the dark chicken meat tender and juicy.  The Terriyaki sauce totally covered the chicken but was not overwhelming sweet.  Vegetables were lightly peppered and had just enough flavoring that you didn't need to dip it into the Terriyaki sauce.

California rolls were good.  The avocado was over ripe so some of it turned brown.  They use the minced mayo crab meat.  It was good tasting inside the mouth but not quite a looker.  Tuna rolls look like they've sat out for a while with the tuna turning grey-ish and seaweed very mushy.

Homemade Udon in soup was yummy.  The home-made noodles had a likeable chewiness to them.

Considering I went during the 2010 Olympics during a busy lunch time, the food turned out pretty well and they didn't artificially increased the price of the food during this time.  The Noodle Combo B I ordered with the chicken, California rolls, and udon were priced very reasonably at $11.50.  Service was fast to take your order and really quick at bringing food but really bad at refilling tea and taking additional orders.  Servers were always very polite however.  Interestingly, during the Olympics, if Canada wins a gold during dinner hours then everything you ordered before the announcement is 30% off.  If Canada wins silver it's 20% off.  If Japan wins, everything you ordered before the announcement is free.  Too bad figure skater, Asada of Japan, didn't win gold.  It's worth a visit if you're in the downtown area and most servers speak Japanese too.
