http://www.sushikatsu-ya.comI just hate being in a new city and not finding anything good to eat. That happened the time I was in San Francisco where I visited almost a year ago. So this time I was going to one up myself and actually plan for a place to go by visit Yelp.com. I found a couple of 5 star out of 5 places on Yelp but they were very expensive (around $250 for two people) so we searched for places with 4.5 stars and with around 3 dollar signs. So what we found with pretty consistently good reviews is Katsu-ya:
The sushi bar:
The chairs are small. Everything about the restaurant is small. This was the first time I've seen a female chef in a sushi restaurant and she's pretty too.
The dining area:
The restaurant is really small and really busy in the evening but they move people quickly.
Hot wet towelette:
Salad:
One of the most plain salads I've had with just greens and tomato. Just a lot of dressing that makes it too salty.
Miso soup:
Just like any other miso soup with some fresh sea weed.
Mixed Sashimi:
The fishes were fresh but no where close to what I had at Sushi Dai in Japan which had the most buttery smooth and fresh fishes I've ever had. The ones at Katsu-ya is smooth and soft too. It's as good as the best sushi I've had in Toronto.
California Rolls:
Minced artificial crab salad is good. Rice is packed well not being too tight or loose.
Lobster and shrimp dynamite:
This dish impressed me the most since I've never seen it before. It's lobster with mayo, mushrooms, and a mix of scampy tails to complimentary the lobsters. The lobster claw was very tasty but the mayo was overwhelming.
I'm not sure you've noticed but I didn't take a photo of the exterior. Katsu-ya is located in a sketchy small mall with very limited parking. There is only street parking or $3 valet available. I don't really trust my car with a stranger so I parked on the street. There were a number of weird people outside which doesn't make it too inviting for most people. The inside was cozy and it was nice to have that feeling of being in Japan since most of the servers spoke in Japanese. The rolls and sashimi was good but not amazing. It bill for our food added up to $46. I left Katsu-ya wishing it had more to offer. I definitely felt let down by all the reviewers on Yelp that gave it a 4.5.

1. West Coast sushi you had wasn't very good OR
2. Where did you go to get really fresh Toronto sushi??
@tiffanyliu0919 oh! That's closer than Katsu-ya to my hotel when I was there. I definitely should consider letting you guys know where I'll be visiting to get some food suggestions
@catch_MOI_attention I haven't been to that area before I have to give it a visit when I'm in the city for a weekend. I'm usually around central park.
@see_lai I really like Akasaka in Richmond Hill. But my review on them is a bit dated (reviewed before the Tummy Points system)
She gives out better TORO at the bar than the table. oh yumm...
Next time you're in LA, let me know. I'll recommend some good sushi places for you.
Your blog is most informative and very well designed/arranged!!
@CareyGLY - thanks! I'm hoping to visit the west coast sometime next year. Yelp wasn't so helpful the last time I went.
