  • Doughnuts: Krispy Kreme vs. Dunkin' Donuts

In Toronto, the default doughnut shop is Tim Hortons just because they're at almost every corner of downtown.  But what exactly is "the"place to go for doughnuts in the US?  Here I bring two popular choices, Krispy Kreme (remember the big impact and long lines they made back in 2003 when they first opened a Mississauga store?) and Dunkin Donuts (the US version of Tim Horton's).  Which one is the doughnut I like most?  Which one do you like?

    Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Donut:

Krispy Kreme doughnuts just melt in your mouth.  They're so sweet and soft it tastes more like eating candy.

    Dunkin Donut Sugar Donut:

You have a lot more choice of flavors at Dunkin Donuts but I like the plain ones which are fluffy and not too sweet.

Surprisingly, although the Krispy Kreme donut is glazed and the Dunkin Donut is sugared, both donuts have very similar nutritional information.  But both give you a super amount of calories, 2000% 10% of the daily recommended, in each donut.  With today's climate of health focus, I can see why donuts aren't flying off the shelf.

But regardless of health impact, which donut do I like more?  I originally thought I'd choose Krispy Kreme because I thought they'd be really good at donuts since that's all they do (I hear they do coffee too but I never see anyone buy it from them).  But if I can get the plain flavors at Dunkin, and the donut is fresh, I'd choose Dunkin over Krispy.

Doughnuts aren't very popular in the US so I haven't run into a lot of good small shops in New York City.  I think cup cakes are all the rage here.  Leave me a message if you know of a good doughnut or have a preference on doughnut.

Donuts are popular in the US--well, personally I love donuts, and I've never been to a town, no matter how small, without a donut shop.  I usually don't like either Krispy Kreme or Dunkin', but if I had to choose I'd go with Dunkin'.  Like you said, there are more choices, and the Krispy Kreme donuts are way too sweet.

NYC is more famous for their bagels & pizza, but there are some good donut shops.  The Donut Plant is famous for their strange flavors and they have cake donuts, yeast donuts, jelly donuts, etc.  I've never eaten there myself, but I've heard they're really good.  Let me know what you think if you try it.

I prefer bagel, only because I can get fat with donuts!  Donut is yummy, but I can only look and salivate.  :(

@stevew918 I just looked up bagel nutrition info from Dunkin and found out their bagels have a really similar nutritional fact to their donuts.  Maybe I'm reading it wrong :S

hehe krispy kremes are around 200 calories per donut therefore it is about 10% of your calorie limit

I remember waiting in line at the sauga one in 2003! They gave out so many free donuts.. mmmmm

@Laika1957 LOL u're right about the calorie percentage.  That Dunkin Donut web site confused me.  Free donuts.... I'd like that.

I have never tried Dunkin Donuts before. I have tried Krispy Kreme and loved it. However, I prefer the kind with white powder on the outside--whatever you call it.
