  • Doughnuts: Krispy Kreme vs. Dunkin' Donuts

In Toronto, the default doughnut shop is Tim Hortons just because they're at almost every corner of downtown.  But what exactly is "the"place to go for doughnuts in the US?  Here I bring two popular choices, Krispy Kreme (remember the big impact and long lines they made back in 2003 when they first opened a Mississauga store?) and Dunkin Donuts (the US version of Tim Horton's).  Which one is the doughnut I like most?  Which one do you like?

    Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Donut:

Krispy Kreme doughnuts just melt in your mouth.  They're so sweet and soft it tastes more like eating candy.

    Dunkin Donut Sugar Donut:

You have a lot more choice of flavors at Dunkin Donuts but I like the plain ones which are fluffy and not too sweet.

Surprisingly, although the Krispy Kreme donut is glazed and the Dunkin Donut is sugared, both donuts have very similar nutritional information.  But both give you a super amount of calories, 2000% 10% of the daily recommended, in each donut.  With today's climate of health focus, I can see why donuts aren't flying off the shelf.

But regardless of health impact, which donut do I like more?  I originally thought I'd choose Krispy Kreme because I thought they'd be really good at donuts since that's all they do (I hear they do coffee too but I never see anyone buy it from them).  But if I can get the plain flavors at Dunkin, and the donut is fresh, I'd choose Dunkin over Krispy.

Doughnuts aren't very popular in the US so I haven't run into a lot of good small shops in New York City.  I think cup cakes are all the rage here.  Leave me a message if you know of a good doughnut or have a preference on doughnut.
