Cafe Charlie
9 E 40th St
Manhattan, NY 10016
212-725-1420New York. It's one of the premier cities in the world for food with their famous pies, cheesecake, and numerous high end restaurants. You will find a Starbucks or street vendor at almost every corner in mid-town Manhattan.
So it will be fitting that on my first day of a New York based project to have dinner at a place right beside my hotel. In, what is essentially, a convenience store, Cafe Charlie:
The entrance is under construction so it's not a pretty sight:
A brightly lit interior with a deli counter at the right of the photo, various hot foods in the middle of the store, and a number of drinks lining the counters:
It was late when I got to the store so I didn't have a good selection of food. I ordered a made to order chicken salad sandwich:
The bread was decently fresh. There were large slices of fresh crispy green peppers and mushrooms. The chicken salad was low fat mayo but I really don't think it's a healthy choice as much as I wanted to stay healthy. The chicken was cold, in large chunks, and in moderate quantity. It was a cold night so I wished it were a hot sandwich.
I had to finish off my dinner was something nice so I got a New York Cheesecake:
This was delicious. Very creamy and light. I wish I wasn't so full from the sandwich to finish off the cheesecake. I would always order this if I came here for dinner more often or dropped by to pick up an evening snack.
I wouldn't make Cafe Charlie a regular place for dinner but it's good for a quick bite or drink. They have a lot of juices, even fresh squeezed juices. They offer hot sandwiches and buffet (pay by the pound) during peak hours and cold sandwiches all through their operating hours. Parking is tricky like most midtown Manhattan establishments. Seating is available upstairs during peak hours. It's open 24 hours in a day so it's a convenient place that isn't ridiculously priced. I was really impressed by their cheesecake but I wonder if they really made it on site.
