  • Sushi-Keiten

    Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan

After a couple days of shopping and eating, we decided to immerse ourselves in some culture by visting the Meiji Shrine:

There's a lot of walking and lots of nature.

You get to see lots of lanterns and bottles that use to hold alcohol along the way.

I don't want to spoil the surprise but let's just say the Meiji Shrine is really lame and not worth the visit.

The subway station we got off was called Harajuku.   We didn't really intend to visit the Meiji Shrine but we wanted to find the harajuku girls.  We didn't see them along the streets by the subway so we thought they were hiding here and since everyone was going this direction, we decided to follow.  They weren't there otherwise I would have posted a picture or two here.

After searching and trying to ask people who didn't have any idea what we were looking for (our charade skills need to improve), we decided it was time to give up the search and eat.  We were over our last bad taste of sushi and willing to try again at Sushi Keiten:

I was a bit excited to see a sushi conveyor belt:

You don't get to see it too often in Sushi restaurants in North America.  I wasn't too amazed to see most of the plates on the belt the more expensive sushi.  Each dish is colour coded to represent a specific price.

    Minced tuna hand roll:

Even though there were only expensive ones on the belt, you can actually custom order things on the menu!  That is great.  The seaweed was super fresh as always.  Minced tuna tastes bad.  It's like a goo of minced cardboard.

    A fried lotus root:

There's some filling with the lotus root.  Freshly fried and both healthy and unhealthy.  This was yummy as the filling was just the right amount (not too much) and tasty.  Worth the  $2.20!

    Saba (Mackeral) sushi:

Not much fast to me.  It was fairly fresh but it was dry from going around the belt a couple time.  About $3.30 is a bit hight.

It's beef!  It's on a bed of rice to make it sushi:

The beef is cold and hard but the onions gives it a good tast.  Perhaps eating the onion on rice would have the same end result.  For $3.30, it is expensive.

Is there any any restaurant out there that can match the freshness of the sushi places in the fish market like Sushi Dai?  It was good food.  It's different than just raw fish all the time.  We happened to see a caucasian with a Japanese girl so we tried to ask them about the harajuki girls but the guy just stared at us so we tried to talk to the Japanese girl in charades and stupid English (like the English you use talking to a baby).  Both of them still just stared blankly at us.  Then one of us asked the girl if she understood English and she said yes.  We felt really stupid speaking stupid English.  Too bad after some explaining they still didn't know where the harajuku girls were.

Back to the restaurant, the food was alright.  It's good to try the different things on the menu.  I would probably hesitate coming back here again.

Yeah, maybe it's too cold for the harajuku girls to be out and about.

You've inspired me to post food photos. :) You can see 'em at ... http://www.photoblog.com/chunkielove - if you're interested, that is. No pressure. :p
