While in Kyoto we stayed at a Japanese styled hotel called the Watazen Ryokan (http://www.watazen.com).  It was very clean, included a Japanese customary treat for each day, staff were very friendly, and the lobby included free wireless Internet:

Just like our hotel in Tokyo, we were just a few minutes walk from a major subway station.

Close to our hotel is an enclosed shopping area called Teramachi street.  This is one of the two long streets lined with small boutiques and restaurants:

One that caught our attention is Restaurant STAR:

This is what specifically caught our attention:

We just had to give this place a try.

A plain seating area that had nice incandescent lighting:

I ordered a fried chicken with noodles and an omelette:

The salad was very light and nicely sweetened with a light dressing.  The omelette had a chunk of rice underneath.  The rice had a flavor I didn't like.  It chicken was battered with something tempura-like.  The batter didn't fall off the chicken and was very crispy and kept the chicken very moist.  Spagetti was hot and lightly flavored with a broth.

A burger patty with spagetti and an omelette (it's hard to avoid eggs in Japan):

The beef patty was made from fresh ground beef.  We're not sure how much of it is really beef.

Slices of beef with, you guessed it, omelette:

Beef quality was bad.  Tasted like from the grocery store's sirloin beef.  There were only 5 slices.

Korean-styled stone bowl (no omelette this time):

We were so filled after our meal that none of us could order a dessert - the main thing that drew us to this restaurant.  All the dishes closely resembled the outside window displayed foods but we were still surprised how similar it came out.  Service was polite as with all Japanese stores.  Bad thing was washroom was tight with only one stall for men and one for women.  Food were all pretty bland in taste with nothing standing out.  Beef quality was really bad and something you should avoid in Japan unless you're getting Wagyu or Kobe.  It was a good restaurant but next time I'll try to stick to the plan and get a dessert.
