Kyoto
Kyoto, Japan
It gets dark quickly in Japan. I think they need to revisit their time zone and adjust it 2 hours faster. But with nightfall we visited a temple nearby to see a lot of lanterns:
Our stomachs were grumbling so we quickly moved on.
Between walking in the main streets of Kyoto with the many shops and the convenient overhangs (you'll appreciate them when it rains)...
... and the dark side streets littered with restaurants and Japanese entertainment, we were getting really tired too. We were looking for Gion corner where there is a theatre presenting arts of Japan like Japanese harp and old styled Japanese comedy (I saw some on TV and it was really hard to watch). Too bad Gion corner was closed for the new year.
After all the walking we found a small unassuming grill house for dinner:
Fried quail egg, egg plant, dumpling:
Everything fried seems to be coated with a layer of tempura-like batter. I like it over Western style but I do like the English fish and chips style too. Fried quail eggs were actually good. There's also fried beef but when is beef good fried?
Grilled Platter - chicken breast, chicken with pepper, liver, chicken Skin, chicken stomach:
I can feel my heart clogging. Chicken stomach tastes exactly like duck stomach, if you've tried that. It's chewed and thick. Grilled chicken breast was dry both ways. The chicken skin wasn't as bad as I'd thought. It was slightly crispy and not too fatty as the fat was probably grilled away.
There were people inside smoking but we sat close to the door so it wasn't too bad. The restaurant staff were pleasant but we could see they were understaffed. Our food came out slowly but was prepared fresh. The two plates above were $20 in total which isn't too expensive but it wasn't very filling. I think I got use to having so much starch in my meals from rice.
