  • Kyoto Station

    Kyoto, Japan

After two days in Tokyo, we we're off on a 3 hour ride to Kyoto in one of the new Japanese bullet trains.  The one below is a 700 series bullet train:

Inside the train resembles the Euro Star trains:

You'll notice a little lever at the bottom of the seat.  That lets you rotate the seat so you can have two seats facing each other.

The ride was smooth and comfortable.  I didn't want to ruin my sleep pattern so I didn't sleep too much on the ride.

When we got to Kyoto station we were hungry and we weren't up for walking blocks finding food.  At the bottom level of the station we found the following restaurant:

A dimly lit interior was nicely decorated:

    Curry pork with Udon:

A thick broth that seems to have a good amount of starch.  It's not the typical Indian or Thai curry but more like a soup.  It's not too spicy either.  Pork meat was stringy.  Udon didn't taste too differently than udon you can get from the grocery store.

    Pork and Udon:

I ordered this expecting something close to Ramen Japan Mutekiya.  I was in the wrong direction.  This was a light soup base with uninspiring piece of pork.  This is something you can probably put together at home.

Service was prompt, nice, and didn't speak English as usual.  The restaurant decorations were nice with high quality wooden chairs and tables.  The food arrived very quickly and prices were reasonable considering it's at a train station.  If I were to go back to Kyoto station, I'd probably skip over this restaurant and venture outside with an empty stomach to find a more interesting restaurant.
