If you've been following the Japanese manga/anime series called Naruto then you should have heard of a popular Japanese dish called ramen.  On our first day in Tokyo, Japan, we went to a popular ramen restaurant, Ramen Japan Mutekiya, to see what makes ramen so much better than instant noodles (I'm thinking "gong jai meen").

With a very tight seating area that only consists of seats at counters (window and kitchen), a line quickly develops.  At least people are usually in and out very quickly and the staff is fast so the wait isn't too bad.  They even took our orders outside to speed up the process.

    Honmaru men - pork soup:

This was their signature dish with pork in pork broth, seaweed, and part of an egg ("tomago").  The pork scent is very strong from the bowl and I could see it's fairly oily from animal fat.  The broth was very thick and full of pork flavor.  There were only two slices of pork but they were cooked well.  The bamboo shoot at the top was cooked in the broth for a long time and was very soft.

A close up of the fresh ramen:

The noodles were springy and chewy - something you'd only find with fresh noodles.

This place is very busy.  There was an even longer line when we left the restaurant.  I recommend coming here early.  Althought it is busy and rushed, the service is always nice, friendly, and thankful.  The ramen and broth was the best we had in our whole trip to Japan and I definitely recommend this place for anyone to taste what ramen is all about.

RYC yes, its impossible to find a trash can for anything other than bottles. even with bottles, its a tough find sometimes.

Hmm, ramen is ramen is ramen for me. hehehe (I mean in terms of restaurants, Im not even gonna mention the packaged crap they try to pass off as ramen.)

I believe the best ramen I've ever had was this street side stall in Shinjuku. Probably the best 500¥ I've ever spent on a meal there. Though I wish I could remember the address, all I can tell you is that it was on the corner of major major street crossing a small pedestrian only street surrounded by a bunch of hostess bars and pachinko parlours.
