Hung Fook Tong Herbal Tea and Desserts
International Gourmet Plaza (Steeles Ave. and Silver Star Blvd)
633 Silver Star Blvd Unit 121
Scarborough, ON
416-293-4029If you've been to the Steeles and Silver Star area on a Friday or weekend evening, you'll have seen crowds of young Asians and a parking lot full of cars. The area features a very large and popular bubble tea and dessert restaurant called Destiny and a smaller dessert restaurant called Hung Fook Tong. The former serves various sugarly drinks, English type desserts like cake and tarts and various fried foods while the latter, which I'm reviewing, serves more traditional Chinese desserts like various teas and sugar soups.
A functional interior with little decorations:
It's very busy in here but table turnover is just high enough that waits aren't too bad.
Mango with light pastry and coconut:
The mangos were surprisingly fresh and sweet but for around $5, it's a bit pricy. It was good but there's just so little.
Peanut sugar soup (tong shui)
You can taste the fine grain taste in this dessert. I'm thinking this was made from powder packages and not from fresh peanuts. It tasted alright but not impressive.
The prices for everything is high compared to the ingredients and quality of food you're receiving. Because the restaurant is so small, there isn't a good feeling to stick around too long. Any dish will run you around $5 or more. If it's late and you're in the area feeling like Chinese desserts but don't feel like making them yourself, this is a good restaurant to drop in for a quick bite. There isn't many restaurants like this in the area so you don't have a choice.
