American food is easy to find in Texas but some of us were feeling a bit home sick.  One way to combat that is to have some Chinese food!  Welcome to Mr. Shabu Shabu, a restaurant serving Shanghai Taiwanese type hot pot.

A very plain brick building.  They face the sun so they have all the windows covered up too.

Inside with a bar-like area and long eating tables with sunk in heaters:

You can order a combination dish with includes the following:

    Raw veggies:

I like my eggs cooked so I cracked it into my hot pot.

    Raw meat:

The meat is very thinly sliced and cooks fast.  It's not enough to fill any one and this is the premium beef.  Looks pretty normal to me.  I wonder what "normal" beef is to them.

    Raw seafood:

Shrimps are great after being cooked.

    More stuff cooked:

It all tastes fairly bland to me.  With the food soaking up all the water, I asked the waitress for more water and she replies, "It's not water.  It's brooth".  My friends all felt it was just plain hot water.  The fish balls were the most tasty part of the meal and some of them were the fresh hand compressed types.

There were some other dishes of animal innards like pork intestine that I didn't take a picture of.

Overall it's a fairly alright hot pot place.  It's fairly healthy but I would consider it quite bland.  The combination cost around $9 so it's fairly reasonable but it won't fill most people.  They have a variety of Chinese only foods as I mentioned earlier so I would say it's one of the few places in Texas to offer it.  As in all hot pots, you have to cook your own food so if you're impatient then this is not the type of food for you.  I probably wouldn't come back as it wasn't too filling and it was bland.

I feel like it's hard to achieve great hot pot flavor without using strong (spicy) Thai flavorings. And then, it's like your mouth is on fire. :)

Hi. I just ran across your site and I would like to add that I agree that the regular broth Shabu Shabu may be a little bland. I never order that one because of that reason, but I must say I do love the spicy version that they have at Mr. Shabu Shabu and it is actually a Taiwanese style restaurant. They also have excellent dishes on their regular menu including Beef Noodle Soup that you should try. One of my favorite Asian restaurants to eat at in the Dallas/Plano area, maybe you should give it another try?
