New Generation Sushi
493 Bloor Street W
Toronto M5S 1Y2It burnt down last year leaving many downtown sushi eaters sad, New Generation is back with a cleaner and brighter interior.
The exterior similar to before and it's unassuming exterior makes it an easy place to forget with the other bright restaurant signs. I forgot to take a picture of the outside so here is one I found from BlogTo (credits below):

Photographer: KevinThe new brighter interior:

It's been a more than a half year since it opened with the new interior and more than a year since i saw the old so I can't accurately remember what it looked like before. I think the seat layout is very similar to before but it's brighter now. Tables are light and small with a plastic coating for easy cleaning. Seats at the front of the restaurant can quickly become a crowded location as there's usually a line forming in the evenings.
Miso soup and salad:

Their salad dressing resembles the most like mayo compared to all the restaurants I've been to.
Salmon roll and cucumber rolls included with bento boxes:

Very small salmon pieces and cucumber. Salmon and cucumber taste fresh.
Steak teriyaki bento box:

This is a great deal with gyoza dumplings, tempura vegetables and a shrimp, steak teriyaki, and the included rolls. The dumpling and tempura are very fresh and crispy. The steak is of the usual fast food Japanese restaurant low quality.
Sushi combo 1 with alaskan rolls, spicy tuna, and california rolls:

The tuna looks very odd. I don't recall tuna looking neon pink like that. They also lacked the rich thick texture of raw tuna from other Japanese restaurants. The spicy tuna roll didn't have much tuna and they don't use a lot of spicy mayo or chilli. I'm not sure what that orange colour is but I think it's suppose to be the spicy part of the roll. The california rolls are alright but the avocado is quite unripe and hard. They serve a lot of people so their rolls are quickly made and you can taste that as rolls are not very tight.
Complimentary green tea ice cream:

The green tea ice cream was very cold and yummy... like every other Japanese place.
The last two times I went to New Generation made me feel like they've changed things for the bad since they re-opened. Their raw fish is not up to par with other Japanese restaurants. However, their bento box specials are a very good value since they include so many things for less than ten dollars. I thought my last experience was an exception but this visit yield the same results so I would not recommend New Generation because of the odd tasting fish in their rolls.
