You can buy a cake from your local grocery store or from various bakeries in town.  But if you're looking for a slice of cake made to restaurant quality with a variety of cakes at a reasonable price then Cafe Maxim is a good place to visit.

You can have your cake at the restaurant or have them as take out.  Some of the cakes they have are: various cheesecakes, their famous meringue cakes, chestnut, various flavoured mousse, black forest, and fruit tarts.  I usually ordered a couple home for my family to compliment afternoon tea or as an evening dessert.  I hear it's also a very welcomed house visit gift.

    Strawberry Almond Meringue:

I think this is all sugar but it's surprisingly not too sweet.  It's very crunchy and delicate.

Mocha cake with a strawberry mousse behind:

    Coffee Cheesecake:

All cakes are fresh daily.  I've ordered cakes from Maxim on many occasions and the quality is always high.  You can order as individual slices for $5 each (order 6 and you don't have to pay tax) or $18 for a whole cake.  From what I can tell, you can order a slice from any cake you see (they cut a mocha cake for my one slice).  They are reasonably priced and you'll be able to find a great cake just about anybody.
